Chess Overview

Welcome to chess, one of the most classic strategy games of all time! With this version of chess online, play without having to set up your chessboard and chess pieces. Most importantly, it is free and no download is required!

How to Play Chess

Knights and pawns get to move first. Knights are the only pieces that can jump over other pieces by moving out two squares across (in any direction) and one square in the perpendicular direction. The pawn is free to move forward two squares and after the first move, it can only move one square forward.

The objective is to attack your opponent's king while also protecting your own king. Bishops can move in any diagonal direction for however many steps are available; rooks can do the same, but only in non-diagonal directions. Queens are your most valuable pieces in chess and can move in any direction for however many steps are available. Kings can move in any direction, at only one square at a time.

When the king is threatened, it is placed in "check" in chess. Once the king is placed in "checkmate," it means that it is impossible to avoid an attack on the king, and it's game over!
